What Do Wild Hogs Eat?
Wild hogs aren’t picky eaters. In fact, they’ll eat just about anything they can find, which is one of the main reasons they’re such a big problem for farmers and landowners across Texas.
Their Favorite Foods
Hogs love agricultural crops — corn, wheat, peanuts, sorghum, and just about anything else they can dig up. They’ll plow through fields in a single night, eating grain right off the stalk or rooting up young plants before they even get a chance to grow.
Digging for More
It’s not just crops. Hogs root through the ground for grubs, worms, and roots. Their rooting tears up pastures, damages soil health, and leaves behind deep ruts that can injure cattle or wreck equipment.
Opportunistic Feeders
Wild hogs are true opportunists. They’ll eat acorns, berries, small animals, and even bird or turkey eggs if they find them. In some cases, they’ll even scavenge carcasses. If it’s edible, a hog will try it.
Why It Matters
Because hogs eat almost everything, they compete directly with native wildlife like deer and turkey, stripping away food sources and destroying habitat. That’s part of why controlling hog populations is so critical for maintaining healthy ecosystems.
