Can Wild Hogs See Well?
One of the most common questions we get is whether wild hogs have good eyesight. The short answer: no, they don’t.
Poor Vision, Strong Instincts
Hogs have relatively weak eyesight compared to many other animals. They’re short to the ground, which makes their line of sight even worse, especially in tall grass, brush, or crops. While they can see movement up close, they don’t rely on their eyes the way deer or coyotes do.
What They Rely On Instead
What hogs lack in vision, they more than make up for with their other senses. Their sense of smell is outstanding, letting them pick up scents from hundreds of yards away. Their hearing is sharp too, which is why they spook so easily at unexpected sounds. These two senses are their main defenses against predators and hunters.
What This Means for Hunters
Because hogs don’t see well, hunters can often get closer than they could with other game animals. But you can’t fool their nose or their ears. Wind direction, stealth, and gear like suppressors and thermals make all the difference when it comes to sneaking up on them.
