Best Caliber for Wild Hog Hunting
Picking the right caliber matters when you’re hunting wild hogs. These animals are tough, thick-skinned, and can take a beating — so the caliber you use can mean the difference between a clean drop and a wounded hog running off.
Why Not 5.56?
The 5.56 NATO round is common, but it’s just not strong enough for hogs. While it can work with perfect shot placement, it doesn’t carry enough weight or energy to consistently put down big pigs, especially when you’re dealing with thick shoulders and tough hides.
Better Choices for Hogs
Hunters often choose heavier, harder-hitting rounds. Some of the best options include:
.300 Blackout – A favorite for suppressed hunting. The larger, heavier bullet hits hard and keeps recoil manageable.
.308 Winchester – A powerhouse round with proven stopping power.
6.8 SPC – Designed as a middle ground, offering more energy than 5.56 but less recoil than .308.
The Bottom Line
Bigger, faster rounds do more damage and give you a better chance at dropping hogs clean. When you’re up against one of the toughest animals in Texas, don’t bring a light round — bring the right one.
